Sickness is a fundamental aspect of the suffering, aging, falling ill, and dying in the cycle of reincarnation. When we live within the confines of our own world, we tend to place at the centre of all things. We view every situation through the lens of personal benefit, which is the very manifestation of the "self," personal ego, and selfishness. This self-centred perspective keeps us tethered to the cycle of rebirth, where illness serves as a stark reminder of our impermanence.
Sickness manifests in two distinct ways: physical suffering and mental suffering. Physical suffering is a solitary experience; it is a burden that no one else can truly share or carry for you. When is no longer under your control, you feel a profound sense of helplessness. This is the most acute sensation for those who are ill.
Mental suffering, however, is often triggered by the physical pain itself. When the body is afflicted by disease and you lose the ability to function independently, it creates a cascade of mental anguish. This internal turmoil often leads to further difficulties, as the mind becomes clouded by the very pain it seeks to escape.
When you allow the "self," personal ego, and selfishness to dominate your thoughts, you may find that of anger, dissatisfaction, and resentment arise easily. These negative states of mind act as a beacon, attracting your and attached spirits from past lives to manifest in the present. The weight of your then acts upon you, making the burden of sickness nearly impossible to bear alone.
To transcend this suffering, you must take proactive steps to purify your heart and mind:
If you hold onto private grievances or resentment, you will only increase the weight of your karmic debt and the intensity of your suffering. Therefore, let go of the ego, embrace the path of the Buddha, and chant all the way to liberation.
