During the second session of the on 3 October 2020, Teacher Practitioner Xia Lianju offered profound teachings on the character 'Zhan' (展), which signifies the act of unfolding, expanding, or spreading one's wings. When one soars high into the vast sky, the view of the flat earth below reveals a boundless perspective. In that moment, the heart becomes as expansive as the heavens. Conversely, if one remains on the ground, one's vision is restricted by the immediate surroundings, limiting the scope of what can be perceived.
Each individual’s Causal Conditions are unique. Some may find it difficult to expand their perspective, feeling trapped by their circumstances. In this world, the distinction between Goodness and evil often rests upon a single thought. By expanding one's vision, one can clearly discern Goodness from evil. When the eye sees clearly, the heart becomes bright and luminous, for the eye and the heart are one entity. If the eyes perceive evil, the heart should counsel them to turn towards Goodness; if the heart harbours evil, the eyes should counsel it to return to the Right Way. Through this mutual guidance, both eye and heart are purified in Goodness.
When these good roots arise within the heart, one’s potential for expansion becomes infinite. The seedlings of the Pure Land are present before us, waiting to be nurtured. With diligence, these seeds grow into sturdy trees that provide shade and comfort to all. This is the essence of the practitioner’s life: to follow the Buddha-actions, to save the world, and to save all suffering beings. This teaching was recorded by the Buddha's disciple, Venerable HaiZe, acting as the chief writer.
