An Interview with Zhou Enlai in the Western Land of Ultimate Bliss (Second Visit)
This is a record of an interview with Venerable Master Sheng Yen, who sought deliverance at the Hsiang Kuang Buddhist Centre in Australia. He now resides in the Western Pure Land of Ultimate Bliss. This account reflects upon his life and his final insights. Recorded by the chief writer, Shi Faxi, on July 6, 2017.
Venerable Master Sheng Yen speaks:
". In those years, I followed the words of the Elder Master Dongchu with absolute obedience. In that simpler society, people rarely harboured complex thoughts; we simply listened and obeyed. My only point of insistence was my desire to study abroad. I held a firm, unwavering attachment to the study of Buddhism. Now, I realise that this was not entirely correct; I should not have been so insistent. I have profound regarding the study of Buddhism; I know it is truly magnificent, and I have always yearned for it deeply.
I loved to study diligently. In order to propagate the and express the sentiments within my heart, I began—I cannot even recall when—to record my thoughts one by one, hoping they might become books for the world to read. Looking back on the past, all of these events feel as if they were unfolding just yesterday. Yet, all of this can never be called back, and I have finished this life. A lifetime is truly nothing more than a drama, a game played out on the stage of existence.
There is a saying: 'Those involved are confused, while the bystanders see clearly.' Remember this well. In the present moment, one may not necessarily be able to see the truth of a situation clearly, even if one is directly involved. It is entirely possible that one is completely enveloped within the walls of the heart that one has constructed oneself. Whether or not those walls exist, you yourself know best. The path of practice is synonymous with the path of life; it is not guaranteed to undergo massive changes.
The unchanging truth, which can also be called the unchanging law, is this: until you have reached the final destination, the outcome remains uncertain. It is very difficult to determine the effectiveness of your efforts, and it is equally difficult to clarify whether the results are good or bad. Today, I share these words to encourage everyone, and I hope that you will all face your own paths with this same perspective. Namo Amituofo."
