When you face the various events and encounters of your daily life, you must learn to keep your heart settled. This state of stillness originates from within your own heart. A heart that has attained meditative concentration is naturally able to remain settled, and a heart that is settled will naturally possess meditative concentration. These two states are mutually dependent; they are the laws of and cause and effect in action within your own spiritual development.
The external world is constantly changing. If you can maintain a state where your mind is settled and unmoving, then no matter how the external environment shifts, your heart will remain undisturbed. This is the true appearance of a mind that does not follow the environment. It is the essential sign of meditative concentration that every practitioner should aim to achieve. When you reach this level, you are able to purify yourself. Your heart becomes clear and luminous, and you will naturally refrain from harming or offending others. This is the hallmark of a steady and profound practice.
Regardless of what others may say about you, how they express their anger toward you, or how rudely they treat you with coarse language, you must always respond with a settled heart. This is the conduct of a practitioner who possesses both virtue and meditative concentration. When you remain calm in the face of hostility, the other person will eventually have an opportunity to awaken. They may feel repenting and shame for their actions. This is because, at the very moment they were consumed by anger and used coarse, disrespectful language, they were creating a negative cause. Consequently, they will inevitably experience the evil consequences of those actions, damaging their own virtue, merits, and . One must be extremely cautious!
