Beings of Space
Naturally So
Life is a phenomenon that exists only in the space between breaths. It is present in a single moment, in the flick of a finger, or in the briefest blink of an eye. Yet, just as quickly as it appears, it can vanish the moment the breath stops. The arrival of life is a profound event, yet its departure is often swift and unexpected. One moment we are here, and in the next, this life concludes, and this physical body reaches its end.
When the physical form ceases to function, where does the spirit without a body go? It is a question that every practitioner must face with absolute clarity. Does the spirit continue to wander along the old, familiar path of being reincarnated within the six realms of existence? Or does it successfully ascend to the of Ultimate Bliss, as one has vowed? Life is inherently fragile, constantly changing, and subject to the law of impermanence.
As long as we possess a single breath, we are continuously performing in the great drama of . For countless aeons, we have been trapped in this cycle, unable to escape the six realms of existence.
We have repeatedly played out the tragic scenes of birth, aging, sickness, death, and the endless suffering that accompanies them. This cycle is not merely a story; it is the reality of our current existence, driven by the momentum of our past actions.
To the students of Hsiang Kuang Pure Land Buddhist Centre, I say this: in this very lifetime, you have been granted a rare and precious opportunity. You have the chance to transcend the limitations of the physical body. You can attain a state where is no longer subject to aging or sickness, and where the spirit never dies. You have the potential to achieve a state of freedom, ensuring your rebirth in the Western Pure Land of Ultimate Bliss. This is the radiance of eternal life—a state that is truly ageless, healthy, and immortal.
The nature of this radiance depends entirely on how you choose to conduct yourself. You must consider how you are managing this great drama of life and death. Are you merely a passive observer, or are you taking charge of your spiritual destiny?
Practitioner Su often reminds the students that there is no such thing as a free lunch in this world. There is no achievement that can be gained without putting in the work. Whether you can fulfil your deepest vows and reach the Western Pure Land of Ultimate Bliss depends entirely on your own commitment.
You must ask yourself if you are truly willing to be active and persistent in your practice. You must be willing to put in the work to study the teachings and apply them to your daily life. If you can truly dedicate yourself in this way, then becoming an awakened being is not a distant, unreachable goal. It is right before your eyes, waiting for you to grasp it with sincerity and unwavering faith.
