Why do we study the Buddha's teachings? The answer is simple yet profound: we study to realise our true nature and attain Buddhahood. This is the singular, noble purpose of our spiritual journey. Between our current state and this ultimate realisation, there lies a necessary process of practice. This path is not always easy, and it is a journey that every disciple of the Buddha must face, overcome, and eventually break through with unwavering determination.
Our original nature is inherently clear and luminous. However, through countless lifetimes, it has become obscured by the dust of the world and the stains of our own confusion. To restore this original face, we must commit ourselves to the work of purification. This is not a task that can be completed in a single moment; it requires the diligent application of our skills and a consistent, daily effort to cleanse the mind of its impurities.
Consider the dedication of a master chef. To create a dish that is truly natural, healthy, and delicious, they must harmonise their with great precision. They rely on their keen sight, their delicate sense of smell, and their refined taste to ensure that every ingredient is perfectly balanced. They prepare a meal that is complete in colour, aroma, and flavour. In the same way, our spiritual practice requires us to coordinate our own senses and faculties, ensuring that our thoughts, words, and actions are aligned with the Truth as we prepare our hearts for the of Ultimate Bliss.
Think of a child who has fallen and is crying in the dust. To grow without fear, that child must find the inner strength to stand up, wipe away their tears, and continue their journey forward. We are much like that child. When we stumble in our practice or face the inevitable challenges of life, we must not remain on the ground in despair. We must find the courage to rise, clear our minds, and continue our path toward the Western Pure Land of Ultimate Bliss. This teaching was recorded by the chief writer, Venerable HaiZe.
