The great earth and all the myriad things within it exist in a natural state of being. You and I are both integral parts of this vast, interconnected existence. Everything in the universe unfolds according to this natural order, moving in perfect rhythm and balance. However, because of the accumulated stains of our attachments, desires, and worldly delusions, we have drifted far away from this original, natural state. We have lost our connection to the simplicity that defines our true nature.
We often turn the ordinary into the extraordinary, complicating what should be simple and serene. Our daily activities—eating, clothing, housing, and travel—should all be conducted with a sense of natural, steady composure. When we live in this ordinary, natural state, our hearts remain calm, without rising or falling, and without the turbulent waves of emotion that usually cloud our judgement. This state of stillness, where the heart remains unmoved even in the midst of daily activity, is the state of meditative concentration. This is the true cultivation of a practitioner.
When you achieve this level of inner peace, everything in your life becomes harmonious and peaceful. Remember, your practice is your own personal journey. Diligent practice is your fundamental duty as a follower of the Buddha. You do this to realise your true nature, your original face. You will find that the natural state is already here, right before your eyes. There is no need to search far away for the truth; it is present in every moment, waiting for you to return to it. By maintaining this focus, you will see that the natural state is not something to be attained, but something to be uncovered through the purification of your body, mind, and spirit.
