In the traditions of Chinese culture, there is a deep appreciation for the virtue of courtesy. It is often said that when people meet, there is an inherent emotional connection, and this is reflected in the practice of reciprocity—the idea that kindness and respect should be returned in kind. This is a way of expressing genuine respect for one another, treating every interaction with the dignity it deserves.
When we engage in these exchanges, we must look beyond the surface. The true value of courtesy lies not in the material weight of a gift, but in the depth of the respect and reverence it contains. This courtesy can manifest in many profound ways:
When we teach and guide beings in this world, if we can align our actions with their hearts and the customs of the world, we will find that our efforts are far more effective. This is a skillful means of teaching, for the human heart is naturally accustomed to such expressions of care and consideration.
This principle of reciprocity is not limited to the human realm; it exists within the spiritual realms as well. Consider how Namo Amituofo, when travelling through the various Buddha-lands, prepares offerings for the Buddhas—such as incense, flowers, banners, and precious canopies. These are the expressions of respect for all Buddhas when paying homage.
This practice teaches us a profound lesson: when we offer respect for all Buddhas, the true beneficiary is ourselves. The act of bowing and offering cultivates our own sense of reverence and humility. By offering to the Buddhas, we are, in essence, making offerings to the Buddha nature within you, which is your true self-nature and Buddha-nature. We are nurturing our own original nature and the seeds of goodness that reside deep within our hearts.
We see this reciprocity even during our Dharma assemblies. Celestial beings often manifest auspicious signs, such as thin clouds forming the shapes of great lotuses, dragons, or phoenixes in the sky. These are not merely sights to behold; they are expressions of gratitude from these beings for the opportunity to come to Hsiang Kuang Buddhist Centre to seek to the Western Pure Land of Ultimate Bliss. Although these clouds may disperse with the wind, the sincerity of their hearts has already been manifested.
Reciprocity is a necessary skillful means for our practice in this world. Let us always act with sincerity, respect, and a heart that seeks to benefit all beings.
