The Pure Land Gate stands as the most direct path within the vast ocean of the Buddha’s teachings. It is a path designed for all beings, regardless of their past, to return to their original nature. When we speak of the direct path, we refer to the singular, unswerving focus on the holy name of . This is not merely a practice of the lips, but a profound commitment of the heart and mind to the path of liberation.
The six-character holy name, Namo Amituofo, is the essence of all wisdom and . To practise this, one must chant the name straight through, without hesitation or interruption. What does it mean to chant from this time to that time? It means that in every single present moment, you remain mindful of the Buddha. You do not let your thoughts wander into the past or the future. This practice has no end; even when you reach the Western Pure Land of Ultimate Bliss, you will continue to chant, for the name is the bridge between your true self and the infinite light of the Buddha.
How many of us truly understand the weight of our existence? We are all subject to the inevitable sufferings of birth, old age, sickness, and death. We find it difficult to be the master of our own lives, constantly swayed by external circumstances and internal desires. We are trapped in the cycle of rebirth, wandering through the six realms without a clear destination. If you truly understand this suffering, you will naturally seek a way to leave it behind and find true liberation.
Why, then, do some practitioners remain lazy or distracted? It is because they have not yet fully grasped the bitterness of samsara. They have not yet realised the magnificent, transformative power contained within the holy name of Namo Amituofo. They do not see how rare and precious it is to encounter this Dharma in this lifetime, and so they allow their days to slip away, one by one, in a state of complacency.
The Fragrant Light of the Buddha is here to lead those who recognise their suffering and sincerely seek the path to liberation. By entering this direct path, you must be active and persistent in your practice. Do not let your efforts falter. Through diligent practice, you will gradually peel away the layers of confusion and impurity that shroud your heart. You will begin to find your true self, that original nature which has always been pure and luminous. This is the way to ensure your rebirth in the Western Pure Land of Ultimate Bliss. Let your practice be your compass, and let the name of Namo Amituofo be your guide. Namo Amituofo.
