Teachings from Teacher Practitioner Xia Lianju, recorded and transcribed by ’s disciple, Venerable Fa Hui.
What is the Buddha-heart? It is the original, luminous nature within every being. When we speak of the Buddha-heart, we are referring to a state of being that embodies the highest virtues:
To cultivate the Buddha-heart, one must actively sever the roots of Greed, Anger, Ignorance, Arrogance, and Doubt. One must also transcend the pull of wealth, lust, fame, food, and sleep.
Conversely, what is the demon-heart? It is not necessarily a separate entity, but a state of mind characterized by the distortion of our true nature. It manifests through:
Why does the demon-heart arise? It often begins with a sense of helplessness. When a person suffers immense harm and finds no true spiritual friend to guide them, they may fall into deep resentment and hatred. Because their personality has become too rigid and difficult to yield, they become trapped by their own past mistakes.
Fear and the desire to escape the laws of and cause and effect lead them further into the demon path, until they eventually become part of the Demon Realm.
In our modern human world, where can we see the influence of the demon-heart? It is pervasive in our digital age:
From ancient times until today, wherever there is the Buddha, there is the demon. We live in the space between the extreme Goodness of the Buddha and the extreme negativity of the demon. Whether we become a Buddha or a demon depends entirely on this heart of ours.
Practice is the process of changing your personality traits, letting go of the demon-heart, and ultimately severing it entirely to rediscover your true self and the Buddha-heart within you. If you remain deluded and refuse to accept guidance, you are walking the demon path. The demon-heart manifests when we lose the ability to regulate our desires.
We must be cautious! The widespread use of technology and mobile devices has covered our inherent Buddha nature with thick layers of dust, making the path of practice much more arduous. Although it is difficult to see your true nature in such an environment, it is only through diligent practice that you can find your way back to the Buddha-heart. Do not let the distractions of the world pull you away from the Universal Principle, the Truth, and the Right Way.
