To stand tall with shoulders back while remaining humble and modest is the true heart and action of a practitioner. When we speak of standing tall with shoulders back, we are not referring to a physical posture alone. Rather, it is a reflection of our internal state. It signifies that we have fully embraced the teachings of the Buddha as presented in the sutras. It means that we are able to put these teachings into practice with complete sincerity. When you stand tall in this way, you can look within your own heart and find no cause for shame. You are walking firmly upon the Truth and the righteous path, aligning your every thought and action with the wisdom of the Buddha.
To be humble and modest is equally essential. This quality signifies that you are deeply aware of your own limitations and shortcomings. It is a recognition that you have not yet reached the ultimate goal. Furthermore, humility arises from the profound understanding that all beings possess the Buddha-nature. Every single being is, in essence, a Buddha. If they appear otherwise, it is only because they have become lost in confusion and delusion, causing them to wander endlessly within the cycle of rebirth. By maintaining a humble heart, you acknowledge this shared potential, which prevents the arising of arrogance and pride.
Humility also manifests as a deep respect for others. This respect is not limited to human beings; it extends to the flowers, the trees, the animals, the insects, and all earthly creatures. This is the natural expression of one who truly respects life. We believe that those who can genuinely respect all forms of life are themselves humble and modest individuals. They understand that the struggle for existence is not easy for any being. Even if our physical eyes cannot perceive them, there are spirits residing within all things. These spirits are aware of how they are treated. When you respect another, you are, in truth, respecting yourself, for they are one of the many beings, and you are also one of them.
A practitioner who is humble and modest is one who can continuously enrich their own spirit. They are open to receiving guidance from others and, more importantly, they are willing to put that guidance into action. This is how one achieves true progress. At Hsiang Kuang Pure Land Buddhist Centre, if you can remain humble and modest, you will possess the foundation for true faith in the Buddha. You will be able to sincerely accept the teachings and guidance provided by , the Teacher, and Practitioner Su. When they point out your faults, you will not become defensive. Instead, you will address these issues, truly change your ways, and walk the path with steady, grounded steps. By doing so, you will have the opportunity to wash away your impurities, restore your original, pure, and clean state, and finally see their true nature. Let us therefore stand tall with shoulders back, yet remain humble and modest, as we walk this path together with the Buddha, the Teacher, and Practitioner Su.
