Teacher Practitioner Xia Lianju’s teachings:
Patience (Endurance) is one of the Six Perfections that Bodhisattvas practise: Generosity (Giving), Discipline (), Patience (Endurance), diligent practice, Meditation (Concentration), and Wisdom (Prajna).
For practitioners who enter the Buddha’s gate from a life of comfort or ease, Patience (Endurance) is a test; for those deeply mired in the heavy habits of this turbid world, it is a lesson that must be faced.
Because it serves to counteract the arrogance, refusal to admit defeat, aggression, subjectivity, self-importance, and self-centredness within the "self," personal ego, and selfishness—all these of the "self" that arise from the false body and —one must possess a heart of and gratitude to overcome it.
One must understand that all things are illusory.
It is because there is a false body that various states manifest, yet the false body itself is illusory; it is not permanent and passes in an instant. Therefore, these personality habits are also all illusory and fundamentally non-existent.
The states manifesting before you now are illusory and not real; you must let go of them so that your body may remain untroubled by these states, thereby removing the obstacles to your practice and advancing towards purification and becoming an awakened being.
Obstacles to practice include the —greed, anger, delusion, arrogance, and doubt—and the —wealth, lust, fame, food, and sleep, which are the five roots of the hells. All must be let go of and severed so that you may pass the test of Patience (Endurance), and so that you may treat yourself, the beings within our bodies, and the countless sentient beings with karmic affinity waiting for your help with compassion!
To save the countless sentient beings with karmic affinity within our bodies, including parents and teachers from past kalpas, , family members, and the countless suffering beings within your vast vow, you must endure the many tests of compassionate Patience (Endurance) to achieve success in your practice. This is what it means to be a true practitioner.
