This is a record of an interview with Su Wang-dan, the mother of Practitioner Su Yue-e. Su Wang-dan sought at the Hsiang Kuang Buddhist Centre in Australia and now resides in the Western Pure Land of Ultimate Bliss. This account reflects upon her transition to the Pure Land. Recorded by the chief writer, Venerable HaiZe, on November 4, 2019.
Venerable HaiZe speaks:
"I respectfully invite Su Wang-dan, who now resides in the Western Pure Land of Ultimate Bliss, to accept this interview."
Su Wang-dan speaks:
". I am A-Dan! My daughter, Practitioner Su Yue-e, asked me to come out and speak, and I am truly overjoyed! This is the first time since I passed away and arrived in the West that I have spoken publicly to everyone, so I am a little shy. My daughter is truly capable! She helped me with the chanting and invited Namo Amituofo to come. That beautiful young lady who told me to chant with everyone—that was Venerable HaiZe! She is truly remarkable!
I remember that time clearly. I was chanting with everyone, and my face turned a soft pink, just as if I were sleeping. I did not look like a person who had passed away at all. It was all thanks to her guidance."
A Mother's Heart and a Daughter's Path
"I know Practitioner Su Yue-e's personality well. She never lets anyone suffer. Her heart is so compassionate, and when she decides to do something, she does it—you could not stop her even if you tried. Back then, when I saw her learning Buddhism and eating vegetarian, I could not bear it. I felt so much heartache for her, so I tried to stop her. I said, 'As long as a person has a good heart, why do you need to eat vegetables?' But she insisted, and she has kept it up until now. She even cooks delicious vegetarian meals for everyone, always worried that people will not have enough to eat. She is just like that, which is why everyone loves to follow her.
She said she wanted to learn the skills of Namo Amituofo; who would have thought she would actually master them? Now, in the Western Pure Land of Ultimate Bliss, many people know her. She often brings many spirits up here—adults, children, beings with strange appearances, from both ancient and modern times. Whenever she arrives here, everyone is busy receiving these spirits, especially during the assembly on Sundays."
The Recognition of the Great Masters
"I know about all the work she does. Sometimes, when these spirits realise I am her mother, they tell me, 'Your daughter is excellent, truly powerful. She has the ability to deliver so many beings to the Western Pure Land of Ultimate Bliss. I have never encountered such a thing; even I was delivered up here by her.' You might wonder, who said that? It was 'Fruit Master'—the great Master Guangqin from Tucheng! Even he said such things. Hearing that made me so happy!
She calls my daughter 'A-Dan's son.' In truth, Practitioner Su Yue-e is my daughter, but when Fruit Master calls her that, it elevates her status, raising her from a daughter to a son. For a master like him to think so highly of her is truly extraordinary. As her mother, I feel so proud!"
Learning to Read at the Feet of the Buddha
"I never had the chance to go to school when I was young. Being able to read was the greatest wish of my life. A wish I could not fulfil in the human world, I have achieved here. I sit before Namo Amituofo to listen to the sutras, and Namo Amituofo teaches me how to recognise characters.
How does the Buddha teach me? Let me tell you, there are no phonetic symbols here. You do not need to recite those primary school primers. The Buddha's voice is so gentle, so slow, and so beautiful. Whenever the Buddha speaks, a large character naturally appears before my eyes—the very word the Buddha is speaking. He knows I want to learn to read, so He uses this method to teach me. I now recognise many characters. Namo Amituofo is the greatest teacher in the world."
The Importance of Deliverance
"I have been sitting before the Buddha, listening to the sutras and learning to read. If Practitioner Su Yue-e comes here, they tell me, 'Your daughter has come up again.' At first, I would go to see her, but I saw that she had become so bright, tall, and busy, so I did not want to disturb her. I let her continue her work. I know she is busy saving people, and that is a wonderful thing. Keep doing it well! Life as a human is full of suffering. To lead everyone to the Western Pure Land of Ultimate Bliss is a virtuous deed. Bringing people to Namo Amituofo is the best way to repay His infinite kindness!
Practitioner Su Yue-e did not just help me reach the West; many of our relatives have also been blessed by her and sent to the Western Pure Land of Ultimate Bliss—her father, grandparents, uncles, and aunts! They are all so happy here. This is such a wonderful place; everyone who sees it loves it. No one who knows about this place would ever want to be anywhere else. Practitioner Su Yue-e, you must let my other children and our relatives who are still in the world know this. If you do not chant Namo Amituofo while you are alive, and if you do not have Practitioner Su Yue-e to guide you, you will just be reborn to suffer again! I have learned so much from Namo Amituofo, including the laws of and cause and effect. I know that being able to give birth to Practitioner Su Yue-e was a result of our good karmic connection.
I advise everyone: hurry and come learn to chant with Practitioner Su Yue-e. You can come to the Western Pure Land of Ultimate Bliss too! I have talked for so long and taken up so much of your time—I am so sorry! Namo Amituofo!
To be a human, your heart must be good so that your actions will be smooth. You must do good deeds and speak kind words. When you encounter difficulties or illness, do not be afraid. Chant Namo Amituofo, and seek Chao Du. In this life, I thought I had not done anything bad, so I did not need to worry about the 'officials' of the underworld. But I did not realise that even though I was a 'good person' in this life, I had done many bad things in my past lives. They all came to collect their debts. Thankfully, Practitioner Su Yue-e could perform Chao Du. Otherwise, I would have had to work like an ox or a horse for lifetimes and still not be able to pay it all back. Deliverance is so important! At the Hsiang Kuang Pure Land Buddhist Centre, with Namo Amituofo and Practitioner Su Yue-e performing Chao Du, you can reach the Western Pure Land of Ultimate Bliss!"
